DEDICATION CEREMONY FOR A BLOOD DONATING ROOM IN THE MDA STATION IN KIRYAT SHEMONA

23/10/2009

Mrs. Lydia Callender from Hendon - England, a young octogenarian, is a very pleasant lady with a sense of humour, determined and fluent with a great love for the State of Israel, Magen David Adom and Kiryat Shemona.

In 1949 Lydia and her late husband came on their first visit to Kiryat Shemona. Even in those days, she was active in raising donations for MDA through the MDAUK friends which was set up in that year. Following that visit and at the request of the late Golda Meir, she worked to get a donation to be able to buy an ambulance for the station in the Galilee. Over the years she has continued her intensive activities for the State of Israel and for Magen David Adom. She has organized events, parties, conferences and concerts, was a member of various committees in the MDAUK friends, urged many people to donate, and on many occasions personally donated money to buy equipment, medical equipment, refurbishing stations, training equipment and ambulances and has been a shining example to everyone.

In 1975 she participated in the laying of the foundation stone for the MDA station in Kiryat Shemona, and two years later was present at the opening ceremony of the station. In the visitors' book in the station one can see her good wishes on the day the station opened on 18.4.1977. Her son came to live in Israel and started his family in the nearby city of Safed, and Lydia's granddaughter took a first aid course and is a volunteer in the station. On Friday 16.10.2009 during the late morning, members of Mrs. Callender's family and friends and relatives, living in the Upper Galilee, together with officials from the Friends' Societies from abroad, MDA UK, Australia, South Africa and Holland, the president of MDA, the directors of the Blood Services and members of its staff, the management of the Yarden region and the staff of the Kiryat Shemona station all gathered together in the Kiryat Shemona station.

We all came to show our gratitude to Mrs. Lydia Callender - vice president of MDAUK and to dedicate the refurbished and modernized blood donating room - the fruit of her generous donation. The event was most appropriate for opening the week of the IMDAC 2009 conference.
