Magen David Adom in Israel has provided the following information for the public this Summer:
How to stay safe in the Israeli Summer
(Some practical advice from Magen David Adom)
The Israeli Summer is hot, some areas of Israel are also very humid (dry weather feels less uncomfortable, but it is still hot!)
- Drink plenty of water. Drink at least 5 litres of water per day. (Carbonated drinks and drinks which contain caffeine do not contribute much liquids). Make sure that little children and elderly drink enough, drink even if you are not thirsty!
- When doing outdoor activities make sure you drink about 10 litres per day.
- Wear light clothes, enabling perspiration to evaporate easily.
- Stay in the shade as much as possible.
- When exposed to the sun, use protection lotion with a high sun protection factor (spf). If you have sun burns with blisters, do not touch them and seek medical attention.
- Avoid intense physical activity during hot hours - Remember: heat stroke might develop even if you drink enough.
- Jellyfish bites/stings: Wash with vinegar diluted in water or with sea water. (Fresh water alone can worsen the pain).
- If you have been bitten or stung while bathing in the sea, seek medical attention immediately.
Be advised; you are probably dehydrated if you have: headaches, nausea, vomiting, heat cramps and/or did not urinate for the last hours.
You should: drink slowly, sweet drink without gas, sipping small quantities at a time, until your urine becomes light in large amounts.
If one vomits - Stop drinking, and seek medical care.
If one becomes - confused, disoriented, belligerent, or any other alteration of one's mental status - it is most probably a heat stroke.
Do: Call an ambulance (Dial 101 from any phone), put the person to rest in the shade, disrobe and cool him.
For medical assistance all over Israel call Magen David Adom - Dial 101 (from any cellular or land line phone)
