Committees

Sports Committee

The MDA Sports committee was formed in the early party of 2003, and is chaired by Mr. Jonathan Cohen.

MDA Fight Night – June 2005

In June 2005 MDA Sports staged its biggest and boldest event to date. A White Collar Boxing evening staged at the legendary York Hall saw 17 members of London’s Jewish community – who had trained for 3 months for the event – most of whom were complete novices – fight in a thrilling 11 bout 3 X 2 minute round event. The evening which was attended by former boxing greats, Mickey Duff, Lou Lazar, Sammy McCarthy, Spencer Oliver and many more former Jewish fighting heroes drew a crowd of nearly 1000 people. It is thought that this is a record attendance for an amateur Jewish sporting event in the UK and this helped raise profits of approximately £25,000 which will be donated directly to the MDA National Blood Centre in Tel Hashomer.

MDA Sports Supper Quiz – March 2005

Following the huge success of the first evening, MDA Sports staged their second annual Sports Supper Quiz in the Freeman Sussman Hall of Stanmore Synagogue on Thursday 17 March 2005. This time 240 people were once again entertained by the hilarious Jonny Gould and Richard Kaufman. With the aide of an auction the evening this time produced profits in excess of £10,000. The money was donated to the MDA National Blood Centre in Tel Hashomer.

MDA Sports “An Evening with Rio” – Panel Event – May 2004

Two months later MDA Sports staged a joint venture with Maccabi GB. Approximately 150 privileged people enjoyed a panel event evening in the Theatre room of the Mayfair Radisson Hotel. Manchester United and England superstar Rio Ferdinand was amongst the panellists who also included premiership manager Sam Allardyce, top Fleet Street hack Shaun Custis of the Sun and expert ITV soccer pundit Robbie Earle. The evening which was hosted by Richard Kaufman was attended by Pini Zahavi. Rio Ferdinand generously brought along signed Manchester United shirts which were auctioned and helped swell the profits from the vent to approximately £2000.00 which was once again allocated to the purchase of disposable medical goods.

MDA Sports Supper Quiz – March 2004

The following March MDA Sports staged their second event which was a sell out Sports Supper Quiz. An appreciative 200 people attended the event at Woodside Park Shul and where entertained by veteran broadcasters Johnny Gould and Richard Kaufman who compered the evening. A number of sporting memorabilia goods were auctioned and this assisted producing profits of juts under £10,000 which was once again allocated towards medical equipment on the MDA ambulances.
